SubductionThe sinking of one plate under another into the mantle. Ocean crust sinks because it is denser.
TrenchA long, deep dip in the sea floor where one plate bends down under another.
Volcanic arcA line of volcanoes that grows on the upper plate, above a plate that is sinking.
Mid-ocean ridgeAn underwater mountain chain along a divergent boundary, where new sea floor forms.
Rift valleyA long valley that forms where a continent is being pulled apart.
StrataLayers of rock, laid down one on top of another over long spans of time.
FoldA bend in rock layers, made when the rock is squeezed from the sides.
UpliftThe slow rising of the land surface as rock is pushed up from below.
EarthquakeA sudden shaking of the ground when rock along a boundary slips after bending for a long time.
OffsetThe distance a feature has been shifted along a fault by plates sliding past each other.
